One of the most exciting aspects of the Global Goals is their interconnectedness. Previously, the multiple areas of development have been treated rather separately within their own categories. Now, however, we have a way to explore how social, environmental and economic development are all related to one another. This year, we are exploring how each goal and their associated targets need to see the achievement of each other in order to be fulfilled as a whole.
Goal 9 aims to ensure buildings are resilient, industry is sustainable and innovation is encouraged, and Goal 10 aims to ensure everyone has equal opportunity to succeed and live their best life possible, regardless of social and physical factors.
Target 9.1 requires that we develop quality, reliable, sustainable and resilient infrastructure to support economic development and human well-being with a focus on affordable and equitable access for all. The key linkage between this target and Goal 10 is the term ‘equitable access’. This includes ensuring those living in lower socio-economic areas have just as ready access to quality and resilient infrastructure which does not interfere with their well-being as those in higher socio-economic areas. Target 9.4 also touches on this by recommending we upgrade infrastructure and retrofit industries to make them sustainable, including through the adoption of clean and environmentally-sound technologies and industrial processes.
Target 9.3 advocates for increased access of small-scale industrial and other enterprises to financial services. This must be done with equality in mind, not discriminating against any business owner due to their age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status, including sexuality. By increasing this access, we can begin work towards Target 10.1: By 2030, progressively achieve and sustain income growth of the bottom 40% of the population at a higher rate than national average.
